magnolia822, xsmoonshine and I were chatting about how we could have an entire fest based on “SOMEONE BEING NAKED MADE THEM DO IT.”
And since it’s Friday and I’m looking for a reason not to write the fic I’m working on right now, let’s do this.
All fandoms and pairings welcome.*

The first time Steve sees the arc reactor, it's a faint blue glow through Stark's black t-shirt. Steve figures it's one of those future things that he'll get to grips with in time. So shirts come with light fittings now, it's hardly the weirdest thing he's heard of since he woke up. And if anyone's going to have a glowing, light-up shirt, obviously it would be Tony Stark. (Steve had thought Howard was a flashy kind of guy, but his son, wow.)
It's Ms. Potts (who Steve thinks is swell, if a little frightening – even back before it was politically incorrect to do so, he doesn't think he'd ever have thought of Ms. Potts as a gal, or even a dame. Ms. Potts is a lady) who makes him realise there's something more to that glow than an affectation. Makes him realise that glowing light set in Tony's chest (he's Tony by this point and they're...not friends, not exactly, but they don't clash so much), is what keeps the man alive. Tony is loud and obnoxious and abrasive and so confident he fills up the whole world, and yet all that's keeping him alive is that glow.
It's fascinating, but Tony is made up of impossibilities, so it just gets added to the list of ways in which the man inside Iron Man is frustrating and unreadable and (maybe Fury is right) utterly unpredictable. Until he finds Tony in the kitchen one afternoon with his shirt off, Bruce bent close to the reactor's glow, looking fascinated. (They bond over ions, Clint had said of Bruce and Tony's technical discussions. Get it? Like – ah, the hell with you all, then. I'll stick to tits and ass jokes from now on.)
Steve stumbles – actually stumbles. He knows how rare that is because he keeps finding lists held to the refrigerator with magnets, or tacked onto his bedroom door, titled Things Cap Did That Made Him Seem Human. Stumbling counts, apparently. Sometimes the handwriting on the list is Natasha's, which Steve finds particularly hurtful.
Tony is telling Bruce an even more edited version of how he ended up needing the reactor than the version Steve read in the file after what he learned from Ms. Potts. Steve had read terms he didn't understand, but guessed amounted to torture, and the idea of people torturing his teammates tends to irritate Bruce. Steve pours himself a coffee from the machine and tries to pretend he is able to look anywhere other than at Tony.
He wonders if the metal casing around the reactor is warm or cool. Has it heated to match Tony's skin, or does it stay cool, like the icy blue light might suggest. Under Bruce's watchful eyes, Tony does something to the reactor, comes back with something in his hand, and the blue glow in his chest is gone.
"What are you doing?" Steve demands, his voice sharp. "I thought – "
Tony looks surprised to see Steve, like in his eagerness to show off to Bruce, he hasn't even noticed Steve standing there. "Relax, Captain Wow," Tony says, slotting the glow back into place. "I do know how this works."
Steve glares down at his coffee and when he looks up, Bruce is gone, and Tony is still shirtless.
"See what you did?" Tony asks, but he sounds mostly joking. "You know the kids hate it when we fight, dear."
Steve doesn't say anything. He's looking at the arc reactor. "That, uh. Keeps you alive, right?" he asks after a moment.
Tony nods, his hands at his sides, bearing Steve's scrutiny without comment.
"Should you be messing with it like that?"
Tony frowns. "I made it. I can mess with it if I want."
And if your heart gets ripped apart, then what?
Even in the privacy of Steve's head, that sounds funny, so he doesn't say it. Tony must read something on his face because he raps his knuckles against the surface of the reactor.
"Tough stuff. Believe me, I am selfishly keen to stay alive these days."
These days, Steve thinks, something uncomfortable in his throat. Compared to what days, he wonders.

Tony huffs a sigh and catches Steve's wrist, pulls his hand up and presses his palm over the reactor. Like Steve suspected, it's cooler than his skin, but then Tony's skin is very, very hot. Tony taps the back of Steve's hand and says, "See? Solid."
"It – " Steve moves his hand without really thinking about it, his fingertips tracing an arc around the reactor's casing before drumming his fingertips against it. "Can you feel that?"
"Feel you touching the metal? No. But it's like... A reverb, I guess. Like this," Tony says, flicking his fingernail against his front teeth. "Except in my chest."
"Huh," Steve says, rubbing his thumb over the blue blow, watching the way it lights up the underneath of his nail.
"You're very interested, Rogers."
"You're very interesting, Stark."
Tony blinks. "Did – did you learn that? Did someone write that for you? Was this whole conversation scripted."
"Uh – no?"
"Well. Good. Because if you're getting the inside scoop on how to flatter me, I will be really – "
"That's flattering?" Steve asks. Because he could say a lot of things about Tony beyond interesting.
"Have you met me?" Tony asks, setting his hands on his hips. "I'm fucking fascinating, Captain. The more of you ordinary people who realise that, the better."
Steve feels like maybe he's being teased, but he quite likes the idea of being the ordinary guy to Tony's genius billionaire playboy philanthropist. When Tony squeezes his wrist, Steve realises he still has his hand on Tony's chest, splayed to the right of the reactor now, and under all that, after everything, he can still feel Tony's heartbeat.
