This is a note to myself (and a copy and paste from a beta comment). I need these handy so I can refer to them and stop making the same damn mistake. Feel free to scroll on past and mock me quietly. Or if you make these mistakes, see also Lay vs Laid.

Raise and rise are like lay and lie. Raise requires an object. So: Harry RAISED his arm in the air, BUT, his arm ROSE. Also, in passive voice: his arm was RAISED. So you could rephrase this if you want to use raised, but the way you have it now, it's rose.

Harry bit his lip and raised his left arm to . . .

Harry bit his lip and his left hand rose to . . .

Harry bit his lip and his left hand raised (an object) . . .

Harry bit his lip; his left arm was raised and pressed . . .

Thank you [livejournal.com profile] faithwood for once again teaching me where my elementary school failed.

Faith as an English teacher:

Harry lay naked on the bed.

Draco laid the sparkly pink dildo beside him.

Harry's dick rose.

Draco raised the bottle of lube.

EVERYONE CLEAR?

I have essays coming in and have already warned the students how badly I take grammatical desasters. I should maybe print out the above and distribute...?

Agree with astridfire! Maybe everybody would have learned it, if our classes were like this. ;)

If English class had those example phrases, I am sure, many, many mistakes could be avoided. ;)

I WANT IN THIS CLASS! Like NOW!

I'd even pay to go to that class! Much better than the college writing class I took where it taught me the same thing, but with Jane...and certainly no sexual paraphernalia!

Those are some of the hardest phrases to use correctly. We've all used them wrongly at some point in our lives, so no one should feel bad about that.

They are hard. But when you are writing a fic and you get it wrong over and over it's nice to know that there are rules that are easy and make sense. :)

Dude, this one always gets me. Also? Laying vs. Lying - and I was an English major, newspaper editor, etc. I just can't seem to get it etched into my brain!

Huh, I'd actually always assumed that using 'lay' when it should be 'lie' etc was an Americanism, because it seems to be only American writers (that I beta for) who regularly use that, but it's SO regular that I thought they must actually use those words in everyday speech.

Date: 2011-10-15 01:39 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] marguerite-26.livejournal.com
nope! just people not knowing the rules. Though I have to admit that in speech it is pretty common here to get it wrong, which doesn't help when you are trying to remember the rules.
