Newsweek attempts to answer the age old questions:

What the hell is Slash? and Where the hell did it come from?

I'm rather impressed at the accuracy of the article.

Where No Man Has Gone Before

*snort*

quote:
Some stories—including many tales centering around "pon farr," the overpowering Vulcan mating impulse introduced in the episode "Amok Time"—are almost unbelievably explicit, but most are primarily about the creation and maintenance of a romantic relationship.

I have this wicked desire to see what exactly makes something "unbelievably explicit". *g*

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] romaine24 for the link!!! *twirls you*

Strangely ... I never think of Mudhoney Trilogy is "explicit" .... because I tend to associate that adjective with sex acts, and those three stories always mean much deeper to me. I see it as a character and psychological study more than anything else...

true, and i know that. but the detailing of the acts is what makes it a form of "explicitness"

Hee! I know :) ... oh, if Mudhoney gets into the media ... I'm sure there will be some hardcore Christians going after JKR with pitchforks and say that she has bewitched us and we are all spiraling to hell ... and then ask to ban the books, ban internet and all TV stations (well, except Fox news)

wait. JKR didn't bewitch us??

I thought she might have wiggled her nose at us too, but then ... seeing the amount of plastic surgery she seems to have gone through, I'm not sure whether her nose can move at all :)

(Why, oh why didn't they ask her to play Narcissa?)

i'm pretty certain she's lost her ability to blink too. which in turn, of course, makes her the perfect narcissa. i truly believe that narcissa malfoy is just a mary sue in disguise. ;)

lmao!

Well, if I'd written HP and wanted to place myself in the books, I would totally marry myself off to Lucius.

amen. or pansy. i mean, we have to assume that canon-wise, she (at some point) got a piece of draco. ;)

Nooo! Really? If you're serious, may I ask why? :D

hmm...well, i've never actually thought about it, but now that i am, i guess i just see some similarities, but on different levels. she's said that hermione is based off of her, but that's referring to herself as a child. as adults, narcissa risked everything for draco; for that one chance that he would survive and have a better life. JK kind of did the same thing with her idea of Harry Potter. she took a chance at hopefully being able to offer her daughter a better life. it paid off for both women.

Hmm... I don't know. To me, I doesn't sound like Mary-sueness, more like when an author writes something, anything, their beliefs and hopes and dreams sometimes leak into the piece their writing at that time. Maybe she's put a bit of herself in every female she's written, bits of her personality split up here and there to make them seem more human and real and this one just happened to be in Narcissa. But thanks for the clarification!

Not sure whether Narcissa is specifically a Sue ... but in the books, all the mothers are cool and great whereas the fathers are all pretty useless to their children, even if they're nice ....

James Potter Sr... DOA
Lucius Malfoy ... need any explanation? :)
Tobias Snape ... domestic violence
Mr Riddle Se ... playboy, heartbreaker, and calcium supplment to Voldie's rebirth.
Arthur Weasley ... nice, but bitten by snakes, can't fix cars and can't quite feed family.
Remus Lupin ... the runaway dad
Harry Potter ... the names, the NAMES!
Ron Weasley ... encourage discrimination of the Malfoy kind

Lucius Malfoy ... need any explanation? :)

you mean promoting bigotry and inbreeding to ensure a so-called pure blood line is NOT the proper way to raise a child? I'M SHOCKED.
