Merlin’s phone gave way from repeated texts to a persistant ringing, and Merlin broke away with a groan. “I suppose I have to face the drama king at some point.” Percival kissed his forehead and waved him away, getting up and heading to the loo to give Merlin some privacy.

“What is it, Arthur?”

“Where are you?”

“I’m still at the hotel.”

A pause.

“Merrrrlin. Did you hook up?”

“Arthur? That is none of your fucking business.”

“I suppose I don’t really have the right to ask, do I?”

Merlin sighed. “No, I don’t suppose you do.”

A longer pause.

“Merlin, I’m so sorry. You know I’m sorry, don’t you? Please answer? Merlin????”

Merlin moved to study himself in the hotel mirror, his hand tracing the faint bruise behind his jaw, the tiny cut on his cheek. “I’m listening.”

“I was out of line. I know. I’m an arse. The biggest arse. But no harm done, yeah? We didn’t fuck. Think how we could have messed up our friendship if we’d actually fucked. But we didn’t… So we’re good, right?”

Merlin thought of and discarded a lifetime of things he wanted to say. Things of love, of hurt, trust and pride and anger. A childhood of things unspoken.

But instead: “Wasn’t the team going to meet for a fry-up this morning? You planning on coming? Our local at 11:00?”

He could hear as Arthur let out all his breath in a rush. His voice sounded choked. “Yeah, of course. That’d be good. Brilliant. See you then?”

“Yeah. See you.” Merlin stood staring at the phone long after he’d shut it off. A hand on his shoulder startled him out of his reverie.

“Alright, Merlin?”

Merlin nodded. “I think so. He knows he screwed up. What it meant. He won’t ask me, but he knows.”

“You going to forgive him?”

“Already have.”

Percival held his tux coat out for him, helping him shrug it on like a true gentleman. “Come on, Shadow-boy. I’ll give you a lift home so you can shower. You’re looking like it was one hell of a prom night.”

“Yeah? What’s my mum gonna think?”

Percival grinned as he held open the door. “That you got lucky.”

Merlin nudged against him as they walked down the corridor. “I really think I did.”

He smiled.

This was really sweet! I have a hard time with Arthur in a bad-guy role, but I think you did it well, and Percy's sweetness somehow helped me overlook Arthur's transgressions a little.

Aww Shadow-boy. I'm glad Merlin had someone there to look out for him and tell him he doesn't deserve that and that he's worth so much more. Friends like that are amazing!

Great job with this story!!

Yeah - that's sort of what I meant by unresolved. I was kindof going for the 1st and 2nd season Arthur, where he's always throwing things and telling Merlin he's useless, and merlin's still loyal enough to die for him, and Arthur totally depends on that. I was kindof going for Merlin starting to realise that he has the right to set boundaries to their friendship, and Arthur at the cusp of learning he'll have to respect those boundaries.

It was an interesting exercise to write. Thanks for your comment. :)

That was devastating. Arthur was cruel and manipulative but still vulnerable, and I have to love Merlin standing up to his shit. Percival was a surprisingly nurturing port in a storm and the kissing and talking really worked. I'm not sure that Percival's done with Arthur yet and I can't imagine that Merlin's really forgiven the cruelty Arthur showed.

Awww, thank you for your comment. I'm sorry it was devastating. It was a bit of an emotional roller-coaster overall, but I think Merlin is happy enough with how it all turned out.
I think perhaps Merlin just doesn't see that he is deserving of a heart's desire or a truely happy ending, and he's made himself be content with what he does have. Straight friend-kisses, and unrequited love. He think's he's got it good, and that's a little heart-breaking, but it's who he is, and I have to love him for it.

I didn't intend this when I wrote it, but now it reminds me a little of his speech to Gilli about always playing the fool. It's the only time Merlin has dropped his constant cheerfulness and truly poured his heart out to complain about his lot.

Anyway, thanks for your comment!

This was incredibly intense. WOW. Well done! My heart breaks for Merlin, because honestly... I think he was too forgiving too soon. If it were me, I don't think I could ever forgive Arthur without first making absolutely and completely sure Arthur understood exactly what Merlin told Percy: that he had betrayed Merlin's trust by using his feelings against him, that he disrespected Merlin's wishes, and didn't treat him as human, let alone as a friend. And even then, it would take years for a friendship to recover from that. Merlin deserves better. I'd love to see a continuation that included Arthur coming to understand the complete devastation he wrought, and having that experience truly change him, make him aware all the time the impact he has on people, make him careful and thoughtful.

<3 Well done!

Haha. Thank you. Wow. What a nice comment. I'm a little giddy.

I guess there is hope for Arthur to become an S4 Arthur at some point, but right now he's fully entrenched in the self-centered prattish S1.

I know I left it without a resolution. I kept trying to soften up Arthur's behaviour, but in the end I left it harsh, not to make a dark Arthur, but because what I really wanted was for Merlin (and Arthur) to be *almost* entirely sure that Arthur would have stopped - but he needed to have doubts. Because his decision at the end wasn't so much about forgiveness, as choosing his direction, making a decision even when he didn't have all the answers. Sometimes that's just the way it is - we have to make our life choices even when we don't have all the facts, even when we have doubts. In a way, it's a sad and screwed up sign of his strength that Merlin allowed himself to choose decisively, encompassing his doubts as part of going forward.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting.

Very true. Except I would say that's always the way it is. We never know what may come, even when we think we have all the angles figured out ahead of time, no matter how certain we feel. Your Merlin's definitely strong to make such a choice; I'm no coward, but I've never yet managed it. :-D

I really liked how unresolved it was. Arthur knows he messed up but I don't think he truly knows just how much. Loved that Percy was there for Merlin. It could have gone much differently if he hadn't. Great job. Loved it.

Thanks so much.
It's funny how I'm realizing important things about the story hours after posting it. I realized that Percy might have swooped in and saved the day, but his action is the very thing that prevented Merlin (and Arthur) from ever really knowing if Arthur would have stopped himself. So because Percival played the hero, we can't ever really know if Arthur was the villain.

Cool on how the author and the reader doesn't always see the same thing. I thought Arthur wouldn't have stopped. Merlin had told him to stop more than once and he hadn't. Plus he was forcibly pushing Merlin's jaw open. Looked to me like the only way he'd have stopped was Merlin biting him as Arthur shoved his penis in or punching him in the balls - which Arthur deserved, btw.

Thanks for this. A great read.

Intense story! The Merlin/Percy kiss was really sweet, even if it was just friendship. I'm not sure Arthur deserves to be forgiven quite so soon; he may have been drunk and frustrated but as Percy points out, he was way out of line and assault charges wouldn't be out of place. Merlin's forgiveness shows strength of character, to not relive Arthur's actions and see them for what they probably were, a drunken mistake, but perhaps it also shows that his heart is a little too big?
I'd love to see a sequel, maybe? Something happens to make Arthur fully realize the extent of his actions?

I think I might do a rewrite, first, that involves some point where their eyes meet right after Arthur starts to get rough, where Merlin can see this instance of sobriety and shock, where Arthur suddenly seems to be shocked by his own actions, but then have Percival arrive before Arthur can really decide what he's going to do about it. I wanted it to be a little more ambiguous, where Arthur really did cross the line by starting to force himself, but where there's a lot more doubt about if he would have followed it through.

I think I left Arthur looking like an unquestionable villain, where in my mind (and Merlin's) it was more that he and Merlin had this long unhealthy tangled relationship that goes too far, and Merlin is realizing that uni is coming and he needs to start growing up, disentangling and setting boundaries and living life for himself, but Arthur is all lost and confused and resentful that Merlin's pulling away, and stupidly drunkenly chooses this night to pull out the strongest weapons he has to keep Merlin at his side where he's supposed to be.

I'm going to use the excuse that I'm just a beginner, and also rushed, and also should have had it beta'd first to turn up all the stuff in my head that didn't quite come through. I'm also really regretting that I shared a dark downer of a story which kindof killed all the happy that was going on here. :(
