This was ridiculous. It looked easy enough when Merlin did it, and Merlin fumbled all his normal, everyday chores he could possibly fumble twice a day and double that on Sundays. He never got Arthur's breakfast to his room without sloshing the water or letting an apple roll off the plate; attempting to sweep the rushes on the floor always ended with the broom rattling in the chair legs or swatting at Arthur's feet; sword-training always ended with him on his back or his arse in the air, and dressing Arthur occasioned far more groping of sensitive bits than anyone would have believed (not that Arthur objected, secretly).

So if Merlin, son of Hunith and klutz extraordinaire, could milk a cow without incident, surely Arthur Pendragon, prince and foremost knight of Camelot, could do the same. He would not be defeated by this treacherous bovine glowering at him with her ears laid back and tail switching sharply as a whip.

"Nice cow," he tried to soothe the dumb beast, holding the bucket of feed in front of him as both distraction and shield in one. He carefully advanced, set the bucket down and backed away, waiting for her to turn to sniff the feed suspiciously. He crept up to her side, using his acclaimed hunter's stealth, and reached for her udder. Her tail struck the back of his head, taking him by surprise. She turned back to glare at him with smug and malicious triumph.

Arthur growled and backed into a defensive crouch, determined not to let this vile beast get the better of him. "You will stand there and surrender your milk like a good citizen of Camelot," he ordered. The cow sneered at him challengingly, as much a stubborn rebel of Escetir as Merlin, come to think of it. "Very well, I accept your challenge."

Fortunately, Gwen came to see what the delay was and rescued him from the cow before things could get much worse. ("Sire, you can't kill the cow, it's the only one Hunith has!")

He feigns a close inspection of his best friend and frowns.

"Actually, forget prudish. Your robe is so soaked already that I can see right through it."

"No, you can't."

"You're wearing the serpent necklace your dad gave you."

"Like everyday."

"Yeah, but today you're keeping the chain long."

Scorpius swallows and turns to Al the first time since Al brings up the crazy idea. "So?"

"The pendant ends right between your…" Al squints at Scorpiu's chest and draws a pair of circles with his fingers. Nipples, he means. "That is just—" Al tuts, and makes a fine Rita Skeeter impression of supreme judgement "—scandalous. Very scandalous."

Scorpius barely refrains himself from looking down. "Everyone has those." He mirrors Al's gesture, traces two circles on Al's chest… and realizes, he can really see Al's nipples through that thread-bare muggle T-shirt. The nipples are pert, and the olive tan skin between them has to be flawlessly smooth, given how it traces the light curve of Al's lean muscles perfectly.

Scorpus also realizes then that he knows the curves of Al's lean muscles.

The house creaks and settles; the wind howls.

Their torch only casts light over a couple square metres of floor while the rest of the room is thrown in shadow. Shapes loom ominously in the dark, like silent hulking giants, or skeltetal arms reaching out to grab them. Merlin knows them to be furniture but can't help seeing other, foreign shapes in those every day objects when he moves his head just so.

Branches batter at the windows and then it thunders and something cracks.

"Must be some stray that's sneaked in the back garden."

"I know," says Merlin, convinced of the truth of Arthur's statement even while a frisson chases up his spine in spite of all rational explanations. "Still, this wasn't a good idea." Merlin drums his fingers on his knees; pokes at a loose floor board with the trip of his trainer. A summer squall deafens them. "We shouldn't have humoured Gwaine."

"If we didn't, he'd have said we were both girls," Arthur says.

"There's nothing wrong with being girls." Merlin lifts the floor board a tick. A cockroach scurries past. “All the girls I know are quite cool.”

Arthur splutters, trying to convey his indignation at the thought Merlin's just expressed, likely wanting to proclaim the virtues of his own manliness, when he cocks his head and tilts up an eyebrow, and you can see he's switched gears and that he thinks he's just had a brilliant idea. "You really think the Dragon Manor is haunted, don't you?"

"Don't be ridiculous!" Merlin drags their upended torch closer. "I know there's no such thing as ghosts."

A creaking floorboard bending under the weight of what Merlin hopes is a rat seems to mock him for being so bold about stating flat out that no spooks exist.

"But think about it," Merlin says reasonably, "this an abandoned house. The only one for miles. What if crack-heads use it as a base? What if some dealer comes and we witness a transaction and a meth monster kills us to shut us up?"

Arthur's lips twitch. He doesn't point out how improbable such a scenario is. Oh, no, he goes for being Arthur. "I promise I'd defend you."

"I can defend myself, thank you," says Merlin, drawing his shoulders up, raking his kees up, and picking the torch up to shine a beam of light across the room.

"But you wouldn't need to," Arthur says loftily. "I'd be there for you."

Merlin flips the torch's switch up and down, intermittently plunging the room into darkness.

"But why would you need to be?" Merlin asks just for the sake of arguing. "Besides, I'd be just as likely protecting you."

Arthur huffs. "One," he says, counting on his fingers, "I'm fitter and stronger than you. And I don't kepp tripping over my own two feet, so I'd be sure to take out any baddie coming our way. I can't see you doing that.”

Knowing

It’s been a really shit week. So shit, in fact, that Arthur can’t remember the last time it was this bad. He doesn’t really love Gwen anymore, truly, but running into a very pregnant version of her at the shops had just been the final reminder of the mess that his life is these days. He has to admit that the shit week is really just the ending to a kind of terrible month and he wonders when it stops being a shit period of time and starts being a whole lifetime of it.

When he finally slams the door to his flat shut and toes off his shoes, he feels so relieved at shutting the rest of the world out that he would sing show tunes if he’d been alone. Instead he just breathes deep, lets his shoulders sag and undoes his tie, shuffling into the living room. Merlin is tucked into the corner of the sofa with his knees bent, his fingers splayed out over the cover of a book. There are cartons of take out on the table and Arthur flops back onto the couch, trapping Merlin’s feet under his thigh.

“You’re the take out god, aren’t you?” Arthur asks, dropping his head against the back of the sofa.

Merlin hums. “Lord and Master of Indian food.” He looks up from his book and smiles, the corner of his eyes crinkling.

“Bless your magic powers,” Arthur says and it sounds like a joke, but he’s never been more serious in his life.

He’s been living with Merlin since he moved out from Gwen’s and Merlin’s magical way of knowing exactly what he needs is the only thing that has kept him afloat for months. It reminds him of when they roomed together at uni, playing Mario Kart until three in the morning and turning their entire floor into a makeshift game of Twister. In the entire mess with Gwen, sharing a living space with Merlin again is the only good thing that’s come out of it.

Merlin tells him stories from work while they eat and if Arthur zones out a little it doesn’t matter because Arthur is more than happy just hearing the familiar sound of Merlin rambling. When they put on Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Merlin laughs more at the opening credits than anything else, as usual.

“We should quit our jobs and start a llama farm,” Merlin says, wrapping his fingers tightly around the bottle of beer.

“A llama farm?” Arthur asks, his lips pulling into a reluctant grin. “You could at least go for alpacas. Much more wool to sell.”

Merlin waves his hand dismissively. “Your priorities are all wrong. Llamas have a cooler name.”

“They spit.”

“So?”

“Do you want to spend every day covered in llama spit?”

“Obviously you’d be the one doing the menial tasks,” Merlin says, the corner of his mouth turned upwards. “I’d just be the figure head of the organisation.”

Arthur glares at him and Merlin tries to glare back until his entire face dissolves into a fit of laughter, his lips spreading into a wide grin. It always seems like Merlin’s laughter takes over his whole face as his cheeks flush and his eyes close into slits. Arthur rolls his eyes at him, pushing at his shoulder half-heartedly. Merlin just continues laughing until he snorts – a sound so ridiculous that Arthur lets out a startled rush of laughter, tumbling out without his permission.

When Merlin folds in on himself, wheezing, in one of those breathless fits of amusement there are no explanations for, Arthur knows. He just knows. It’s suddenly there, like a fact of life, as natural as breathing. He wants Merlin to be there, always – to be his and no one else’s. All he needs is Merlin, who knows him better than anyone and has a magical sense of what he needs at all times. He wonders if Merlin’s fingers would know Arthur’s body instinctively, if he’d find that spot under Arthur’s ear like he finds all of Arthur’s secrets. He wonders if Merlin’s lips would feel as familiar as his voice, soothing and loving and challenging all at once.

Arthur knows, but he doesn’t know if his life just got better or worse.

I loved this (as always)! You always breathe such life into the characters, it blows me away.

If I have a gripe with JKR, it would be her characters are sometimes quite 2-dimensional. I always felt there could be more to Petunia - how could she not feel some connection to her sister's son? People are so much more complex than just 'good' or 'bad', and if she does try to add more to them (eg Dudley when they are leaving, or Narcissa towards the end of the last book) it always feels like too little too late.

Anyway, this adds so much more to Petunia's motivations and feelings. I love her realisation about her marriage to Vernon ("Suddenly, she realised he blocked the light"), and then she sees her freedom by closing her eyes. Just perfect x
