I think it's a good day for another one word prompt fest. Due to cold medication I make no claims to any of the words I write making any sense but that's never stopped me before. and just feel like having a bit of fun and hope you'll join me!

So.

Link to previous such posts if you aren't familiar with the idea

Comment with two characters and a one word prompt.

1) See a prompt you like? write it!!! word count is not an issue - this is a distraction/writing exercise. Just have fun. paragraphs and sentences are still awesome fills.

2) Drawbles are awesomesauce!

3) Multiple drabble-like comment porns are welcome. If a prompt's been written, it can be written again.

4) If you see a little fic/paragraph/comment thingy that you like, feel free to write a continuation of it.

Let's just have some fun. Don't be shy.

[As with pretty much anything in this journal, all fandoms welcome but you'll likely get most attention for Merlin and Harry Potter]

A bit late to the party. (I’m the slowest writer ever..) But hey, here’s a little Regency AU wood-chopping-fic for you. :D PG-13 (or maybe just PG?), 900 words

--

Arthur wanders out to the back of the house, looking for Melin, intending to ask his opinion on whether to wear blue or green to the Lord Du Lac’s ball that night. When Arthur steps out of the door to the sunlit yard, he stops dead on his tracks. He has found Merlin, all right, but the matter of the colour of his evening attire is losing its importance faster than one can say fiddlesticks.

Merlin is chopping wood, and since it’s a rather warm summer day, and the yard is bathed in sun to boot, he’s doing it without his shirt. But that’s not what makes Arthur stare, even though shirtless Merlin isn’t actually that usual a sight to begin with. No, it’s the fact that at some point during the last few months Merlin has somehow managed to grow up.

Oh, he’s still the same good natured and strong minded, slightly clumsy valet who has put up with Arthur’s moods and impulses since the day they met, still the amazingly kind and caring and helpful person he has always been, but now he suddenly has a body to go with all that and Arthur is frozen in the doorway, wondering how he has managed not to notice Merlin’s broadening shoulders and maturing figure, watching the muscles in Merlin’s arms and upper body work as he swings the axe and chops yet another piece of wood in two.

At first Merlin doesn’t seem to notice Arthur’s stare but keeps up the rhythmic whack-a-thunk of the chopping. However, before Arthur manages to completely collect himself and go back inside Merlin straightens up, stretches, muscles flexing under his skin and turns towards Arthur. Then he smiles.

And it’s that smile, that face splitting grin so full of joy and knowledge and twinkling eyes, which destroys Arthur. Before he realizes what he is doing Arthur is striding across the yard, gaze locked in Merlin’s. He sees Merlin’s eyes widen slightly as he takes in the determined set of Arthur’s jaw. The axe falls from Merlin’s grasp and hits the ground with a soft thump.

Not caring if they are seen Arthur pushes Merlin against the rough wall of the woodshed, one hand splayed on the center of Merlin’s damp and warm chest and the other coming to cradle his head as Arthur closes the last few inches between them with a kiss.

The kiss is nothing he expected but everything he has yearned for. And he has yearned it, Arthur sees that now. Months, if not years, worth of dancing around each other, the touches and looks and all the moments between them coming suddenly crystal clear. Arthur’s kiss is demanding and a little frantic and the small mew Merlin makes in the back of his throat makes Arthur answer with a moan of his own. Merlin has fisted his hands in the lapels of Arthur’s coat, hanging on like his life might depend on it, meeting Arthur for every move, giving as good as he gets.

After what feels like a small forever the kiss has transformed into more languid strokes of their lips and tongue until it dwindles to an end and Arthur leans his forehead on Merlin’s. He doesn’t know at which point he has closed his eyes, but Arthur is slightly afraid to open them now, even though judging by the kiss they have just shared and the small brush of Merlin’s lips on the corner of his mouth he is sure his eyes won’t find rejection or hurt in Merlin’s gaze.

So while Arthur waits his courage to regroup itself he focuses on Merlin’s breath on his face instead, warm and familiar, smelling of apples and something Arthur can’t quite place. He takes note in the detached sort of way how Merlin’s skin seems to quiver under Arthur’s touch as his hands wander almost leisurely across Merlin’s shoulders and chest and sides, and how Merlin slowly releases his death grip on Arthur’s coat and slides his hands up, twining his fingers in the hair in the nape of Arthur’s neck.

Then a sudden crashing sound nearby makes them jump apart like they had been doused with cold water. Arthur looks around to see William the stable hand standing next to an upturned wheelbarrow his load of building bricks strewn all around him, looking miserable and swearing. He seems to be oblivious to anything but his misfortune with the wheelbarrow and relaxing slightly Arthur turns his gaze back to Merlin, grasping to find words, any words, to somehow address the situation they now find themselves in but Merlin’s eyes are warm and reassuring and so achingly knowing that Arthur gives up on words and just waves his hands in a vague gesture indicating he should go back to the house.

Merlin nods his understanding and makes hand gestures of his own to go help poor William out and Arthur backs away and turns to walk towards the house, feeling slightly dazed by his own actions and the kiss and the way Merlin’s whole being seemed to say ‘about time, you dolt’.

When Arthur is nearly at the door he hears Merlin call out and turns to see him standing next to the pile of bricks, shadowing his eyes with one hand.

“Hey, Arthur! You should wear the blue velvet tonight, with the silver-embroidered waistcoat. They bring out your eyes.”

I loved so much about this. Arthur's immediate reactionand stalking across the distance between them and BAM KISS. Hee!

And the ending, reverting back to normal, no panic. Very nice. They'll get back to it again whenthey are alone. ;)

Thank You! *hugs* I'm so glad you liked this.

And I was a bit afraid that the ending might be a bit abrupt but yes, they should have plenty of opportunities to get back to it later... :D

This was so sweet! I loved the way you described Arthur seeing Merlin with new eyes, and then Arthur's determined (if sudden) walk over. Really lovely read!
