January 2012 Harry/Draco Crack Broom Recs

I had the pleasure of being the Harry/Draco reccer at crack_broom for January. Unfortunately, we got told a little later than usual so I lost a week or so of rec time and didn’t get as many recs done as I would have liked. I had another 3-4 fics lined up but suddenly it was Feb 1! I guess I’ll have to sign up again sometime. :)

Why you chose this piece:

This art contains four panels. Any one of them I would rec here as an astounding piece full of emotion, erotic detail. Together, these four pieces are simply stunning. As much as this is good porn, and beautiful art – I love the story it tells. To me, Harry and Draco are both incredibly gentle with each other, worshiping each other’s bodies. To me, the panels show slow, tender love-making with an homage to the past (Draco’s scars) but not the anger that seems to be long gone (Harry’s closed eyes in the second panel make him appear very loving). Once you've looked past the obvious (hot like burning and very pretty), I hope see something else too.

However that might all be because I’ve over analyzed it in the 100 + times I’ve clicked on this.

This is a gorgeous art piece. It captures a stolen moment, an almost kiss and half-clothed men – so many of my favourite things. I love the expression on their faces and the beautiful draping fabric. Also Draco has a fantastic arse. ;)

Why you chose this piece:

It's a lovely pose, gorgeous expression on Draco's face and I love that Harry's is barely visible but for a mess of hair and one eye. This little 'moment' says so much about them, in my mind. It's a story onto itself.

Title: The Boy Who Only Lived Twice

Why everyone should read this:

For 56k, I found this fic an incredibly easy read. It had great pacing and charming style that made me want to never put it down. For me, the most interesting thing about the fic was the interesting take on Unspeakables (which I included in my excerpt below). The author crafted this world of deceptions, misunderstandings and intrigue by creating a setting in which the main characters are always assuming another identity through polyjuice. I love the idea of not just using polyjuice for occasional disguises, but using it to create a single different identity over a long period of time to ensure your own identity is kept secret. And it is known by both characters that they are operating under guises (very comic book hero type storytelling, but something I don't think I've read in this fandom). That concept is a key element through the entire fic, with they readers all knowing (or believing they know) so much more than the main characters). It felt fresh and made for interesting perspective-driven storytelling. Also, there was lots and lots of crazy hot sex. so.

Why everyone should read this:

This fic is not just incredibly long and well written, it's also incredibly unique. It’s an 8th year Hogwarts fic that uses JKR’s storytelling style in a way that I’ve never seen done in fandom before. The characterisation and the plot are done perfectly in the style of the books, with humour and mystery and clever twists and lots of great H/D sex. Oh, wait... that bit is a nice surprise. ;) But beyond the pairing it is the storytelling that is so gorgeous in this fic. The way Harry ‘notices things’ (how his friends are acting, seemingly insignificant details) and as a reader you know these things are clues and just like with the books, you tuck them away because they are clearly important and you’ll need them later. This, mixed in with the stories of the ensemble of characters moving through eight year, is a fanfic that doesn’t try to ‘fix’ canon, but continues canon... with H/D as a reasonable possibility.

Why everyone should read this:

This fic is an incredibly fun read. It's hot, first of all. And the banter and anger and misunderstandings between Harry and Draco really sizzle. Harry in this is very much the sex on a stick, in control and sure of himself Head Auror that I adore. He takes no shit from Draco and dishes as good as he gets. And the idea of porn in the wizarding word being created by memory splicing, it being a fine art that Draco perfects is pretty brilliant. The basic concept is that Draco gets the idea that somewhere out there there must be a memory in someone's mind of them having sex with Harry Potter. And that memory must have a price and he is willing to pay big because he can then take that memory and make custom porn for anyone that wants to see themselves fucked by Harry. It works on so many levels. ;) But the path to getting such a memory is not as easy as Draco would hope.

Why everyone should read this:

This is a post-DH, pre-Epilogue fic with a Draco who trying to make his way in the post-war world with quite literary no luck at all. He is manipulated at every turn, and like we saw in HBP, Draco holds the welfare of his family very seriously but is also terribly inept at carrying out orders that go against his own morals. The result is an intense look at Draco’s character and his choices, mixed with humour and sex and violence. It’s gritty with the background of a Casino/Mafia type setting, run by the Lestrange brothers who 'own' Draco. Well worth the read for Draco’s journey alone, though Harry is spot-on, and delicious to boot.
