Spoilers for Merlin S4 (via HERE- not sure if they are really 'new' but something about the wording here stuck me differently...



And Merlin and Arthur? That's the key relationship, so how much does the change of tone impact on that?
Hugely -- the writers have been playing with The Madness of King George for the feel of the new series regarding Uther. When somebody is incapable of doing their job and being the king, who takes over? That's Arthur's new role. There's a new villain this series in the form of Agravain, Arthur's uncle, who is not as he seems (I'm not giving anything away by saying that!) What's upsetting for Merlin is that family bonds seem to overrule friendship, regardless of what he's done for Arthur and what they've been through together, family seems to overpower all of that. So I've played a lot of scenes where Merlin is calling on friendship, looking at things from the heart, and it's not clicking. That's a big thing for Merlin to try and overcome.

Yeah - I caught the 'hints' that the Uncle was bad, Merlin was going to 'know it' but to hear it so point blank:

God, I just hope it's not something where Arthur is left in the dark until episode 12.

Not surprising. "sigh" I guess we'll just have to live on the various scraps of M/A that appears every now and then (usually at the end). Ugh. Or we could live forever in denial and pretend the series ended after Series 1.

On the other hand, Merlin Cast must have gone to either 6 Flags or Disneyland after Comic Con!! Damn I knew I should have asked him about Disneyland instead of blathering on about the weather. Argh!!

I think the fact that Agravain is Arthur's *mother's* brother probably will play into the fact that family bonds overrule friendship. Arthur can't have had much contact with Ygraine's relatives and he's going to want to believe the best of them. It's a shame, but I can see why it might happen.

I'm just going to remember the season tag and wait for things to get better!

I'm not surprised at all, it's probably going to go the same way as Morgana, nobody notices or believes he's evil apart from Gaius and Merlin.
Every new season feels like Arthur and Merlin are less and less friends than before :(

Aw man, when I heard the 'family ties' thing I thought it'd be about Arthur's devotion to Uther and I thought, 'yeah, I can get on board with that' because I love the idea of Arthur being all torn between what he thinks and what his father thinks and secretly angsting. But some uncle? Some random uncle?!?

If Gwaine and Lancelot forget Merlin's existence and aren't his BFFs for life while Arthur's ignoring him I will cry

Arthur's devotion to Uther is a wonderful plot device. It's consistant with his character from the first season, it's understandable and sympathetic.

this... idek.. they are going to have to sell it for me to believe it. And already - I don't like the ~look of Agravain. he looks EVIL. So everything in me is like WHY do you trust him Arthur? WHY?

Professional lurker here, so forgive me for the intrusion; I had to comment on this.

I think Arthur will be left in the dark until episode 12, actually, because Agravaine is probably Morgana and Morgause's spy in the court, and he can only be of use of them on the inside. Also, I suspect Merlin will mostly keep quiet about his suspicions, share worried glances with Gaius over dinner, and basically follow Agravaine and Arthur around everywhere to make sure bad stuff doesn't happen.

Um. Yes. But I still look forward to S4, and because I suspect Merlin will only bring up Agravaine's possible evil intentions a couple of times, the Arthur/Merlin relationship shouldn't be too affected by Agravaine's presence... which isn't saying much, because I want PROGRESS, but yeah.

Just my two cents. ;D

I think you are right and that is my biggest fear.

I'm still looking forward to S4, too. Don't get me wrong. I'll be all pompoms and popping champagne when it starts but I still want to hope that we will see progress between Merlin and Arthur.

Though I guess the less progress we see on-screen, the more inspiration there is for us to write/read fic about it. :D

I hope Merlin gets some Gwaine cuddles while this shit is going down. Colin keeps talking about being LOST and LONELY and that episode preview thing mentioned IN TORMENT and I'm like oh christ, I like angst and all but THIS MIGHT ACTUALLY KILL ME.

I'm no less excited for it, but I definitely think the angst is gonna be... angsty this season.

so much what I was thinking. I remember finishing S2 and thinking okay, I need to write, write, write all the ways that this is fixed and Arthur finally BELIEVES Merlin and sees him for what he is and ... well... it's time to actually see a bit of that in the show now, okay?

That said - BRING ON S4!!!! I want it so badly. No matter what it brings. just.. this spoiler was not what I wanted to hear.

Fair warning to everyone who knows me: if it goes down like that, I'm going to be really, really angry about it. I've gritted my teeth and smiled through two seasons of that crap; there's only so much "lonely and ignored Merlin" and "deliberately obtuse Arthur" that my nerves can take before I run screaming into the nearest uber-fluffy AU and never come out again.

*twitches* I think I might commit myself to writing fix-it drabbles after the saddest eps. I had this insane idea for a Season 2 AU where Merlin isn't tracked when he goes after Morgana to the Druids, and instead Morgana writes an Epic Letter to Uther about how now she's free and she has magic and if he ever loved her, he will leave her alone....and also, send return mail by Merlin. We will know if there's anyone else and won't come to get the mail! And Arthur convinces his father, and Merlin becomes a messenger boy, and ther is Morgana/Merlin friendship. /random

Last series, it was Merlin keeping quiet because Morgana was blackmailing him and he knew very well that Uther would believe her over him. Probably figured Arthur would too. So now we get the same thing, only this time it's Agravain who's the dastardly bad guy injecting poison at the heart of Camelot, and when Merlin tries to warn Arthur, Arthur's all, "But he's my mummy's brother! Never mind that my other uncle went fucking nuts and tried to kill Daddy and then came back as this butt-ugly wraith and tried to kill both me and Daddy!"

Fuuuuuuuuck.

Oh, and that comment about how even Gwen's rise in status is creating barriers between her and Merlin? Total fail there too. Seriously, what the fuck does it take for Merlin to get some recognition and the ability to move up in the world? I get that the writers/producers are still iffy on the whole magical reveal (still don't agree, and think they're being idiots about it, but whatev), but they can still give Merlin some recognition for his many deeds in saving Arthur and Camelot from their own stupidity without giving away the ranch.

Honestly. I'm going to go stick my head into AU fic where Merlin gets to be awesome and then recognized for it.
