Merlin, Uther - scars

It wasn't often that Merlin helped the king, but times like this called for it. Times when Camelot was collapsing on herself and Arthur was fighting, and there was nothing magical Merlin could do to help. He stood by Uther, peeling off the blood-soaked clothing, the copper-stained chainmail. He cleaned his wounds wordlessly and dressed each of them, spreading the salve over the fresh cuts, taking care so they wouldn't be infected. Merlin patched up the torn skin and wrapped Uther in bandages. He replaced the night gown, and the air was still around them. Uther nodded his thanks and Merlin was dismissed. He left as quietly as possible, his mind racing over Uther, over his fresh wounds, and the old ones - the scars he carried with him everywhere. But not just those on his body, as the resigned look on his face dawned on Merlin, and he looked down at the salve and bandages in his hands, knowing that he could not help all those wounds, knowing that some scars were there to stay.

So lovely!!! I love Merlin's thoughts on Uther and understanding just how damaged he is and how nothing can be done to heal those wounds. I imagine that bugs Merlin - to see something, someone that he cannot fix, no matter how powerful he is. Thank you for this! :)
