The sorcerer had known them well.

Merlin had followed the call for help that’d sounded so much like Arthur’s voice, and predictably walked into the trap. Frantically looking for Arthur’s body among the fallen soldiers, he hadn’t seen the curse coming towards him until it was too late. And Arthur, Merlin had been told, hadn’t hesitated to seek out the cure, had reached his hands deep into the cursed fire to retrieve the antidote without a second thought.

But the sorcerer hadn’t counted on Arthur’s courage, his ability to fight through the pain of flayed hands and still hold a sword well enough to kill.

Now Merlin nursed Arthur, fed him and washed him, read reports and signed documents on Arthur’s behalf.

Arthur’s bandaged hands fumbled at the blanket that had fallen too low for the cool night air.

Merlin pulled the cover up. “It will get better, Sire.” Guilt settled heavy in his belly at Arthur’s broken, empty stare.

“I am a king who cannot wield a sword.”

“You are far greater than the sum of your two hands. You will heal; I’ll see to that.” He kissed Arthur’s brow and whispered, “Until then, let me be your hands.”

This was just so lovely. That last little bit sums up every bit of Merlin and Arthur and though it's never spoke it's a thousand ways implied in everything that they do!!!
