I read three awesome fics in a row last night and just… *rolls around in the love*

The Unbroken Thread by [livejournal.com profile] dayari [PG-13] (12k)
Summary: In which Arthur has Micturition syncope, and Merlin develops the annoying habit of burrowing into every part of Arthur's life that's not under lock and key.
This fic comes with a warnings for illness (though not terminal). Arthur's illness (while not life threatening) is mortifying to him, and makes him incredible vulnerable which in turn makes him prickly and stubborn and determined to deal with it without help. It a gorgeous portrayal of Arthur and pitch perfect to how I think canon Arthur would accept such a thing. I'm not really a fan of 'illness' fics in general but while this fic explored the impact of the condition on Arthur's life and the secrets he had to keep, it had none of the oppressive angst and devastation that often comes with illness fics. It was perfectly balance and brilliantly written. I suggest not looking up the details of the illness. It reads better without knowing, imo

Architecture and Authority and Welcome the Tide by [livejournal.com profile] lolafeist [R] (~7k combined)
Summary: Arthur Pendragon takes a shortcut on his way home from work and interrupts a hate crime against a sorcerer.
This is a fascinating magical Modern AU, with Uther as Mayor enforcing 'registration' and ' magic neutralising bands' on all sorcerers. Merlin becomes the victim of a hate crime. When Arthur stumbles upon a beaten Merlin, suddenly the people his father has been oppressing have a face. A wonderful complex story in very few words. I would love to see more of this universe.

A Lever and a Place to Stand by [livejournal.com profile] lassiter [R] (12k)
Summary: Modern day AU. When a peaceful march for the equal rights of magicians ends badly, Merlin is forced to hide out in the apartment of law student Arthur Pendragon.
This is an older magical Modern AU that I've seen on many rec lists but somehow never read. As a bit of a fluke, I happened to print it to read right before lola's Architecture and Authority. I love the two fics read together because, well, I'm like that. I adore seeing two fics with a similar premise be explored (even though unintentionally) by different authors. This is a gorgeous fic set in the aftermath of a peaceful protest that ended with many sorcerers shot dead. Merlin is forced into hiding and Arthur takes him in. I love Merlin's frustration at being 'trapped' when he just wants to grieve and wants to get back to his work on magi rights. Arthur in the meantime has been working on a thesis about magi rights, but suddenly he needs to face the reality of all he is writing about. Fascinating fic.

Have I ever told you how much I like and appreciate your recs? Even though I don't always like all the fics you rec (mostly because different kinks) I can always see that every fic is well-written. I'm so glad Cheryl pointed me to you when I first discovered the Merlin fandom and didn't know where to find good fics ^^

*smooches*

*twirls* Thanks, bb. I don't expect anyone to like all my recs. Even my absolute favourite reccers that love everything I love kind of thing rec stuff that just doesn't work for me. :)

I write my 'why I'm reccing this' in the hopes to help people figure out if this is one that they will be in agreement (or not!) with me.
