ETA: FOUND!!! Specifically archeologist_d's list of spells from series 1 & 2 gave me exactly what I had been googling myself to death over. I'm keeping this post and the lovely helpful comments around for future reference.

Is there any site around that has the scripts or just episode transcripts of Merlin? I remember on Buffy there was a lovely site that had every ep transcribed and it was a quick easy way to get the spelling/exact dialogue if you needed it. Merlin must have something like this, y/n?

Failing that, is there a site that will give Gaelic translations of English words to use for spells? Google is failing me. I keep getting linked to sites with downloadable translators and hello, not what I am looking for! I just want one word!

Any fandom secret where authors get the spells/translations they use?

I have no idea concerning the first and as for the second: I use google translate (http://translate.google.com/#). Other than that I'm not really so helpful (sorry!)

I tried google translate and babblefish, but what do you translate into for Merlin? I thought it was Gaelic. :/ And those translators don't have a 'Gaelic' option.

Or do I not know what I'm talking about? That's very possible. HP was so easy with latin. *cries*

Gaelic's actually not a single language, it's a group of languages: Scots Gaelic, Irish and... I think Manx? I think Merlin's more likely to speak Welsh than any of those (or Old English, as others have suggested, also works)

Yes, Gaelic is certainly not the answer. It does seem to be Old English based on the spells he uses in the show.

And thank you for the clarification! I was getting very confused with all the wiki entries of Gaelic and what it means. :D

Most of my fics (and almost all of those are unposted WIP's), or actually, all but one (sort of), are AU's, so I just sort of breeze through the magic bit without really getting into the words. Mostly. But I thought I read somewhere (and it kills me I can't think of where) that it was Welsh. I think. I'm kinda useless here, haha!

GOD! I was never in the HP fandom (Merlin is actually my first ever, interestingly enough), but the LATIN. I am working on a minor in Latin and took it for years so of course the fandom I'm in doesn't actually use it for spells but Welsh instead which would be brilliant to learn imo.

Right now, my paperlegends story has Merlin saying, "OLDE ENGLISH!" every time he does a spell. When I get around to fixing it, I'm planning to use nyxelestia posted a quick guide to Old English (http://nyxelestia.livejournal.com/7935.html) and archeologist_d's list of spells (http://community.livejournal.com/merlin_tv/908387.html) from series 1 & 2.

hee! I totally have no idea. In the example I was working on, I wanted Merlin to burn something. And remembered that he made something burn by whispering a spell like... 'beurn' or 'buern' or God... I had no idea!!! but no translation of 'BURN' into anything sounded like what Merlin said.

two hours later... I am going nuts!

but the link above from arch_d has:
Merlin lighting the fire in the village fight
Spelling according to Merlin the Complete Guide = Baerne
Meaning according to Merlin the Complete Guide = Burn.

so... Baerne is my magic word. heh.

Now this Old English (http://fajardo-acosta.com/worldlit/language/english-old.htm) site I just found does have Baerne meaning 'burn', but yeah... IDEK. I don't think I would have been able to find it if I only had the english word to go by.

er... yeah. so for a stupid line in a 2k bit of filthy porn... I should have just reworded it. LOL.

I'm feeling about 90 percent better. Still coughing a bit, but nothing medicinal is working so I'll just have to let this bullshit ween its way out of my system.

Yeah, I really wanted to go to Bry's, but I am going to Dragon*con the first week of September, and I have to pay my house taxes by the end of this month, so I can't really afford to go, which sucks. I really wanted to meet you :-(

On a side note, your girl Jewel Staite will be at DC. If I can swing it, I'll try and snag you an autograph.

I rely so much on HP Lexicon and Potterwords it's crazy! I hate being blind and possibly making ridiculous errors. (like spelling Gaius wrong in my first two merlin fics. lalalla)
