I’ve been thinking about different versions of different characters and while we all want to be ‘canon’ (whatever that means to each of us), each version of these characters has its special something that makes it unique.

For writers, they are our babies. evil brain eating babies We give them life and put a piece of ourselves into each of them, even though they don’t really belong to us. Our version is ours and we love them.

For readers, they are the characters we fall in love with, we think about, dream about. They define who pops into our head when we read a name.

Writers/artists: who is the character you have written/drawn that you love the most.

By which I mean which character of which of your fics.

Maybe it wasn’t your favourite fic but one character of that fic always made you feel like you created something special there. Or he or she still lives in your head and hangs out, makes you laugh or shiver. (maybe whispers in your ear still.... but you don’t need to admit that to us).
REASONS and LINKS are appreciated

If you are not a writer/artist, feel free to share the character that you've read that still haunts your dreams/nightmares because the author truly 'nailed it' for you and made that character come to life.

Remember this isn't about your favourite fic, but a well loved character.

It is 'my' Draco who lives in my head the most I think. I do have a tendency to write a vulnerable/messed-up Draco. He appears in a few fics, but I think the Draco from Burn, Burn will always be my favourite. Writing that Draco defined Draco for me and, even though he's evolved over the years, when I pick up the pen, it's broken!Draco from Burn, Burn that talks to me and helps me shape my next one.

hmm... that's my answer for the moment, could easily change in an hour. :D

LOL. I had to reply to your post, just to stop you editing any further. (I'm evil like that).

Lovely quote, and I concede that I am a reader before I am a writer. And everyone is welcome to mention the favourite character of someone else's creation, however I didn't want people to feel like they, in any way, were comparing their own characters to someone else's by mentioning them both here.

:D

Oh, I quite agree.

On all counts.

And really, the more I think about it, the more I realise that in fact, it is the idea of England - and in a sense the Matter of Britain - that really does drive me and the stories I tell, and is the most consistent character. It turns out that my participation in fandom actually is what's been laughingly called: One Long Britpick.

Of Pick and Paens

I think that 'Britpick' too weak in that context, although it's a funny line. Your fic is far more than a correction of non-British formulations and conceptions. Your work often presents a deceptively hazy and antiquarian collection of minutiae and trivial detail that are suddenly thrown into sharp focus by plot elements. It is only then that the reader realises that, genuinely, every jot matters. I don't know if it's a pick or a state of mind, but it's something v unusual indeed.

Oh, my dear.

You are as always far too kind; and I, far too fortunate in my readers. Thank you. (And now back to the Open....)

Never stop Britpicking.
