Oof! I spent 3 hrs last night picking teams for Mr. M's World Cup pool entry.

I suggested we just pick based on the prettiest boys in The Non-Football Fan's Guide to the World Cup (Thank you [livejournal.com profile] chantefable for that lovely link)

but he insisted that we trudge through sports sites from various countries and see what everyone had to say about EVERY TEAM and make intelligent guesses with calculated risks. Well, he has been watching Merlin with me, so it's kinda the least I could do. :D

Still, I just know that the person that knows nothing about football and picked based on flag colours will always win. *sigh*

But! YAY!!! Football fever is here!

*rolls around in sweaty, well-muscled thighs*

hopefully i can avoid everything to do with the world cup *hates football*

Good luck! *hands you blinders and earplugs*

I adore football, actually. We generally try to catch every single game during the tournament. Though 3 hrs of looking up who was injured on each team and the likelihood of a European team winning outside of Europe was just... even beyond my love of the sport. :D

i can totally see why someone would love it because i do adore other sports, like i was glued to the screen throughout the stanley cup but OMG football, it kills me D:

We call it soccer too. Football here is nowhere near as civilised as soccer (but it does involve endearingly tiny shorts!)

*loves tiny shorts* :D

btw - in our pool we have Australia moving past the first round! Go aussies!!! :D

I used to find Kaká cute back in 2002, but I think he's lost the cuteness and the hotness. Or maybe it's because I can't stand how heavy he is in his faith, and I find him annoying, and then it spoils everything.

We picked kaka as one of our goal scorers but don't have Brazil going very far (one of our calculated risks) :D

other than that I know nothing about him. *g*

Lucky you, honestly! :)

As per Brazil in the world cup, I'm sad to say I don't believe in the hexa this year, but I sure hope we get to the final game. I'm still pissed at the elimination in 2006, because that fucking team wasn't playing properly. Besides, I love Dunga, and I don't want him to get fired after the Cup.

lol. The S.O. and I set up our own pool, based on... well, IDEK what. I went for teams I'd vaguely heard were good, but also, yes, remembered some from that well-muscled thighs!post. :)

ORLY? hee! world cup pools are so much fun. Esp. if your team gets kicked out early and it gives you at least something to keep you interested. :D

We should compare notes. :D who's in your final?

We have a two-tiered system, mostly because we only vaguely understand how round-robins work, lalala, so we each picked two teams from each Group for now, and then we're going to re-evaluate when it gets to the Round of 16. If one of us has, like, 14 teams left and one has 2, we can re-pick. If it's kind of even, we keep them the same.

Umm, but perhaps we have no idea how pools actually work? lol. Mostly it's just an outlet for my small, sweet-looking S.O. who is actually roaringly competitive at heart and loves having bragging rights over any sort of victory, lol. I tend to be more Hufflepuff about these things, so I'm indulging.

I don't even remember who I have for now, except I do know I ended up with both North Korea and South Korea. :/ I think I have Brazil and Argentina, though, so that might be good...

Date: 2010-06-10 01:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] marguerite-26.livejournal.com
hahaha! I think our excel spreadsheet with automatic pre-filling of roundrobin spots based on first round results is just what you need. :DDD
But yeah, we picked all the way through to the final last night, so if Italy get eliminated in the first round, our chances are pretty much hopeless.

But still, it's totally fun.

*squishes indulgent!you and competitive!S.O.*
that's just adorable.

OMG That is the best link ever. LOL!

I really want to watch the England vs. US game this Saturday, but I'll be bartending at the time. Here's hoping I can talk my dad into turning to it anyway. *fingers crossed*

Hot men, indeed. ;)

*reminds herself to put WM [we call it "Weltmeisterschaft"] up on the wall which means removing Rai's art for DBB* Hm. There is some subtle irony hidden in that statement. Hm. We should try watching England vs. US while being online. :)

The WC is the only sports event I try to be aware of.
And my teams are totally random. US, Mexico, Argentine, and Japan. Though, I like to watch and decide I like a totally different team. hehe

From: [identity profile] marguerite-26.livejournal.com
Did you get to pick those yourself or were those 'assigned' to you? Our pool was us going through and saying the exact order we thought each team would end up in the first round all the way through to who would win the final. yikes. it was hard. :D

Good luck with yours. (we have US and Argentine going on, but not Mexico or Japan - so I'm only half with you. *g*)

*g* Pretty boys are pretty!

I have no idea who could win this year. Usually I have this gut feeling, and whoever I gut-feel about ends up second. LOL. But this year? Blank slate. Never mind, though, we're just here for the sweaty, muscled thighs...

I always hope Italy wins (i like my hubby happy!), and then France (of course) but we've had a few years of one or the other doing very well. I think we'll be disappointed this year. :)

We had a WC sweepstake at work, and you're looking at the lucky girl who got North Korea :( There's 2 quid I won't see again!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed very tight for England this time, but I suspect the quarter finals is as far as we'll go. My money's on Spain to snatch it. But I'll be happy as long as I get to gaze at Steven Gerrards thighs *happy sigh*

Hee! good luck with North Korea! :D

you never know... *snickers*

I would like to see England do well. We've got them making it to the semi in the pool, but I do hope they get further. :D

My money's on Spain to choke, with the Netherlands finally doing well. *crosses fingers*

I'm so excited for the football. I support Ireland so I don't have a personal interest this time around, but will be watching as many matches as possible just for the love of the game. So excited!

Yeah, I do love the game regardless. And I love to see an underdog win. I have my fingers crossed for ivory coast and cameroon.

LOL

I'm more worried about how to avoid being attacked by protesters/police in two weeks while I attempt to go to school during the week of the G20. The most amusing part is that my school's opening our auditorium to watch the soccer matches but wants to charge $5/non-student. It's like..uh, why wouldn't they go to a bar instead?

Yikes! good luck with all the G20 crazyness. What a pain. :(

We went to see the final two years ago in a movie theatre and it was pretty cool, but yeah. a bar, totally my preference. (even at seven in the morning. *g*)
