Morning Lovelies!!!
Oct. 18th, 2010 09:56 amI'm back from the land of internet less. (and at friends skip 360 or so, any links to stuff I missed would be very appreciated!)
I had a post planned out in my head, talking about ... something. I don't remember what because catching up on my flist I caught lots of lovely posts about positive female characters (or lack there of) depending on what the article was about. Hmmm... I have lots of thoughts on this.
I adore female characters. And not just in a want to get in their knickers kind of way (though a bit of that too) But I love to read about female characters. I'm a slasher who has a huge kink for well-written, well-rounded, well-characterised female characters. Of any age.
gabrielleabelle has an awesome chart showing relationship both female-female and male-male of various scifi shows. It demonstrates that while a show like Buffy is centered around a female character and has incredible depth and flexibility to it
s female-female relationships, it does not inhibit the ability to have equally complex male-male relationships. I think shows like Xena, while very female-positive, don't give that same balance. And as the charts shows, most male-centric shows (even if they have strong female characters) don't have the depth/complexity to their female-female relationships.
As an aside - I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see that chart done for HP or Merlin though I have no technical skills to do so. Just throwing that out there!
Also linked this morning by
dalmeny was an article on Single Feisty Females and the Bechdel-Wallace test.
Why have I never heard of this test before?
It's quite brilliant. Women who exist together (with brains enough to converse!) for the purpose of something greater than enhancing the man's plot and/or discussing their love lives!
Other cool links!
melusinahp linked to Connecting with female characters in geek television.
Oh, dear. Now that sounds familiar. :/
[ETA: possible spoilers for Merlin 3.06 in comments]

Any film passes the Bechdel-Wallace test if it contains one scene in which
1. Two women
2. Talk to EACH OTHER
3. About something other than a man.

‘I just don’t really like many female characters, you know?’
