I followed this baby along devotedly while it was a WIP. It just finished posting this morning, so I can finally rec it. It’s a wonderful read. It’s set in New York and the author takes full advantage of that to create a world we don’t often see in fic. It has this great class divide of New York ~old money and the working class which adds a lot of depth to this fic. The story has all kinds of fascinating subplots going on, all tangled together as complicated histories, families and relationships are bound to get. It think the ‘au-ness’ of it may be struggle for some readers, but I found the unique presentation here to be really fresh and delightful to read.

Lovely non-werewolf AU, with Derek as a food blogger (soooo hungry after reading this fic). In this fic Derek is deaf, and I while I’ve read a lot of fics with one of the main pairing deaf, I particularly liked how it was handled here. Derek is a fantastic character, very engaging and charming, and the entire fic was incredibly romantic without being either too angsty or too fluffy.

This is a feel-good, non-werewolf au. It’s exactly what’s on the tin, jock/nerd get together fic. I read it under a blanket, with a cup of tea on a cold day. Lovely.

Sometime around mid summer, during the intervening weeks of baseball camp and recovering from baseball camp and the latest Minecraft update, Jinx hops up the plastic step stool to their bed and says, “Derek’s daemon won’t talk to me.”

This is a ‘His Dark Materials’ crossover. I’ve never read the books, but I’ve liked quite a few crossovers with that fandom. Despite the summary's confusing reference to baseball camp... this fic is actually canon-compliant (mostly, I think?) through S2, except that it includes the concept of daemon’s. If you want to know more about daemon’s, the author has handy notes, however, it’s not really necessary. Once you get past 'the everyone has this creature hanging around them' bit, this fic is essentially Teen wolf-esque ‘monster of the week’ fic. great read.

Everyone graduates from high school on the same day.

This fic is just BEAUTIFULLY DONE. Honestly, one of the best, most realistic Sterek fics I’ve read and WHY SO FEW KUDOS??? This fic starts with a moment of weakness for Derek under the influence of ~something and he sees Erica all over Stiles and just … wants and reaches out and gets... Erica. Stiles just turns away, hurt. Then a relationship with Erica is easy and Derek is broken anyway and Erica makes things better, being there while everyone is off to college. So that is how the story begins. It’s basically a journey of Derek figuring himself out and healing, and later of Stiles (the sequel is in Stiles POV) finding his place in the pack/Derek’s life. This fic patient and beautiful, and the end game feels really earned.
(as an aside, I felt the Erica/Derek was handled really well and realistically. She was a well rounded character and an important person in Derek’s life, not a token body to get Stiles and Derek together).

I read this while it was a WIP and it was a blissful experience. unpossible knows how to give good WIP (just fyi, for future temptations) updates were daily, sometimes twice a day, solid writing, solid plot. And the fics get finished. Definitely an author worth subscribing too if you like WIPs without the risks. Anyway - this fic. Werewolf AU, Sheriff falls on hard times and Stiles turns to prostitution to save his father from losing their house. Derek is looking for someone to spend the ‘mating moon’ with, so they can fuck like bunnies, no strings attached. It’s an eventful weekend. Of smut and feels.
Note that after chapter 16 (ie: right before the last chapter) this fic has a series of Interlude chapters that I highly recommend reading before moving on to chapter 17. It’s worth it.

If you ever ever click the Teen Wolf tag on AO3 you will discover in about 3.2 seconds that Teen Wolf is up to their eyeballs in WIPs. I've been following about 20. Yesterday I started another 6. I decided on the following:

It's been so long since the last chapter that when the new chapter starts with: 'Ten days later Derek is still furious' you have about 20 different plots run through your head as to WHY he's furious before you finally give up and re-read previous chapters.

Summary is the greatest idea ever; author is that one person you'd sworn off after they abandoned their millionth WIP.

You find a WIP that you'd never seen before, summary looks really interesting and OMG! It’s now complete! 27/27 chapters… you are tingling with hope. Then Scott is called a dumbass, a bad friend and basically the reason for everything shitty in Stiles life, all within the first 2 paragraphs. -_-

You are 17 chapters in and you realize you honestly don't give shit any longer.

You've been following along and loving it and the last chapter finally got posted. You can barely breathe until you start reading and WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT?

that said... I can't can't can't give them up because there exists the rare glorious beast: the perfect wip. [not to be mistaken with the perfect fic, which is a whole different topic]. The perfect wip is lovely to read, leaves you thinking about it for the days in between updates. It sinks into your mind and you dream about it, thinking of the ways the next scene will go... it becomes a living breathing part of you until that last chapter is posted and you utter a satisfied sigh because yes yes yes the author came through. YES! Damn that was good. *wipes brow*

It's a completely different experience then reading a fic in one sitting, devouring and moving on to the next.

Pretend boyfriends/no-Hale fire AU. The rest of the world stays intact (ie: Scott is still bitten, Scott/Stiles and best friends, and also have good relations with the Hale pack). This is set outside of Beacon Hills, in a college town where Scott, Stiles and Derek all attend school. When Laura comes for a visit, Derek has to scramble to find a boyfriend and Stiles is conveniently there. Beyond the pretend boyfriend awesome ust stuff they is a great magic!wtf! subplot. This fic is funny and hot. A really charming read.

This fic is a series of three fics. The one linked above is actually the second (the longest and the main fic). The first fic in the series is a short journey through Stiles teenager years and the events leading up to Cry Havoc. However, while reading Cry Havoc, I felt I would have enjoyed the mystery more if I hadn’t read the backstory already. Maybe that's the type of reader I am, I'd rather my imagination fill in the blanks rather that have for much ~known. Though I’m sure not everyone would feel that way. Anyway - either way you read it, this series is excellent. It’s heartbreaking and fascinating. Full of action and adventure and mystery. Lots of UST and hidden truths. Amazing read. [just a note to say that I haven’t read the third piece in the series.]

There are quite a few of these types of fic around, but I have a soft spot for this premise. I particularly liked the relationship Stiles develops with Allison and Lydia when he returns.

ALSO!!!!!!!1 If anyone has non-sterek recs for me, I would would LOVE SOME. I've been fic diving like crazy and I do have a few rare pair recs, but non-sterek fic diving is really really time consuming. :/

Not what it says on the tin, but the stuff inside is awesome anyway. While the title and summary advertize size kink, the fic is much more of a scent kink/possessive kink type fic. REGARDLESS, it’s fucking hot. A great PWP. A nice mix of ‘when did you get so hot?’ and ‘you smell really good when you smell like me’. Also intercrural, which is always an excellent choice.

HP/Teen Wolf fusion. While I love the ~idea of crossovers, they rarely really make me love them. It’s usually a little awkward with one universe shoved into another... idek. But somehow this wasn’t awkward. This was an HP fic. 100% an HP fic. Except that the main characters were from Teen Wolf. But it FELT like an HP fic, is I guess what I’m trying to say. Like while reading it I was lost in the fic and never felt ‘omg! crossover!’ It was just Hogwarts in 2013, the HP universe fully intact and not bent to meet the author's ends… god, this is a rambly rec. but whatever. This fusion worked. SEEMLESSLY. House choices were brilliant. Plot, characterisation, UST and sex were all great. And yeah. Well done, author. Well done. Though, I will mention teacher/student (or coach/player???) trope. so ymmv! But for more of you, that's just more incentive.

A long canon fic! so rare these days! First: the summary implies an established relationship, but it’s not. The fic starts not long after the end of S2, and the plot is dealing with the whole alpha pack threat thing. It has tons of lovely h/c and so much Sheriff. I love questioning, smart Sheriff. And Stiles exploring his ‘spark’, another trope I love. However... you’ll need to scroll past the tumblr tags. Such an awesome way to ruin what is otherwise an interesting fic.

This was not at all the simple pwp I was expecting when I started reading. I love the world the author built here (without actually going into too much detail, it was sparse and intriguing). And Derek was hilarious. and very Derek. I really loved it and I hope the author makes this into a series because there is so much more to tell of this story.

Summary: AU – Werewolves are an enslaved underclass, collared and tagged by human masters. Detective Stilinski’s on duty the night they bring in an untagged stray.

This fic is a slave AU, so mind the warnings. I can’t always handle those, but this starts with Derek having already escaped so that helped. Anyway - it’s got fantastic world building. Stiles is a detective who mostly keeps out of werewolf politics, but when a stray alpha with no owner ends up in his holding cell, he knows that if he turns him over to the proper authorities it’s a death sentence. The alternative, getting involved, changes his life. This is a powerful fic both about human rights, turning a blind eye, the challenges of doing the right thing, but also about compassion and love and all kinds of beautiful things. An amazing read.

Despite the title, this isn’t really a ‘zombie fic’ really. I can’t really read zombie fics. D: I’m anti-zombie. Instead this fic is about Derek writing a zombie novel and needing help because he can’t figure out how to make it all ~work with his plot. So enter Stiles. There are snippets through-out the fic of Derek’s novel (plenty enough for those of you who LOVE zombies, and easy enough to skim for those who do not) and it’s great to see both storylines play out. Also Derek’s characterization works surprisingly well as an author (I kept imagining Emma Thompson in Stranger than Fiction) Great not-really-a-zombie fic.

This fic follows the typical hooker saved by a client trope, but damn, it's wonderfully done. They are both a complete mess and the sex is totally hot. There's actually a good reason why Stiles is selling sex to werewolves (his specialty) and it's filled with a good balance of humour, sex, angst and romance.

And... I went fic diving last night and yes... scary! but I survived and even found a few old(ish) fics that I adored. So...

This fic is so fascinating! (thx to otta_ff for pointing me to it!) I can’t say enough about it. Stiles doesn't live in chronological order. Or maybe he's already lived through this life once??? Anyway, his timeline of what is happening atm is constantly messed up because he never knows what stage of his life he’s in. It’s like a mix of a story told backwards and an amnesia fic and jumping into an alternate universe all in one. Er. But better than that because the story is so well told and told through Derek’s pov as he tries to figure out what is happening with this weird Stiles kid who sometimes acts like he knows Derek WAY more than he actually does.

Tons of recs for this came out when it was first posted and IDEK!!! but I didn’t read it. There was another fics with a similar premise that I’d read, I think. So I thought: been there, done that. But ah, man. I finally sat down to read this last night and I really loved it. It’s aching and beautiful like many post-breakup fics, but the reason for the breakup was logical and the forgiveness/cleaning up misunderstandings happened at a natural, realistic progression. Lovely read.

And the relationship of Peter/Stiles runs exactly as it did in the first (ie: completely unhealthy and a little scary and yet it works for them). Please note the warnings. There is character death in this fic. Let me know if you want to know who.

Summary: Stiles deals with the aftermath of being abducted by Peter Hale and left for dead. It's harder than he would have thought to accept his place in the pack when he's convinced that he's the 'weak one' and can't protect himself. Fortunately, Scott and Sheriff Stilinski are there to help, and to nag Derek until he helps, too.

Could be read as sterek pre-slash, there was plenty of UST there. But mainly this is a gen fic. It deviates from canon S1, with Peter taking the nurse out of the trunk and putting Stiles in it and leaving the car abandoned in the woods. It’s a long while before it’s found. Stiles deals with post-kidnapping issues, while Peter is still alive and missing and Derek is not yet an Alpha. Well written and fascinating AU. The author has continued past this with a couple WIPs that are additions to the series, but I’m content with this first bit and consider the fic complete.

Fun AU! Bodyguard Derek is perfectly angry, stoic and professional, but prankster Stiles just gets under his skin. Very entertaining read.
