Arthur was absolute crap at sharing. Always had been. When he was younger and all of a sudden Morgana had shown up and he'd been expected to share with her? Well, let's just say things didn't go so well.
Not only was Arthur crap at sharing things, like actual physical objects, he was crap at sharing the things that weren't physical as well, all those things that went on inside his head and his heart. So few people had ever managed to reach in to pull them out of him, those pesky emotions, and even then the war was hard fought and not easily won.
Arthur was difficult and he made people work for his affections and his trust. It wasn't a trait he was proud of, nothing of the sort. He knew he was more than a tough nut to crack and that people often gave up on him, but despite all of that he just couldn't bring himself to change.
But then he met Gwaine who was pretty much the biggest pecker Arthur had ever met. He was arrogant and flippant and annoying as hell, but he'd set his sights on Arthur for some reason, pursued him with an intensity Arthur'd never experienced before. It freaked Arthur the fuck out and he pushed Gwaine away at every chance, but Gwaine didn't give up. For some reason he seemed to believe Arthur was worth fighting for and it was because of that belief that Arthur was finally able to let go.
It was unbearable at times, and scary as hell, like falling off a fucking cliff, but then Gwaine would kiss him and his mind would stop thinking, stop putting up defenses, stop pushing away. And sure, it was still like falling off a fucking cliff, but instead of falling he was flying and that was the best damn thing he'd ever felt.
So, sure, Arthur was still crap at sharing, horrible even, but Gwaine would laugh at him for being a dick and to Arthur's surprise he'd say, 'I love you,' in return instead of, 'shut it, you twat' and it didn't so much matter that he was still crap at sharing. He shared with Gwaine, and really, he was all that mattered so Arthur figured he was doing just fine.
