Penny requested Merlin fic and well... there went my 'but I'm only reading in that fandom' clause. LOL. Also, apparently, I can't write fluff in Merlin fandom either.

Author's Notes:For [livejournal.com profile] themostepotente for her 40th. She asked for Arthur/Merlin and Green Apples. I doubt this is what she had in mind, but that rat soup scene kinda made my brain explode and I couldn't help thinking that Arthur got off on it. Hope you like it, Penny. Happy Birthday.

Thank you to my lovely [livejournal.com profile] melusinahp, who gave this a lightning fast beta this morning.

The Green Apple

"Eat it."

Merlin choked on a laugh, like he thought Arthur might be joking. He wasn't.

Arthur stood behind Merlin, who was seated in Arthur's place with Arthur's breakfast offering in front of him. "Eat it."

Merlin turned the apple around in his hand. The soft, dented flesh smelled of rancid cider and Arthur's lips quirked. Merlin stumbled over his response. "Um, no thanks, actually. Not a fan of apples. Really."

Merlin tried to stand but Arthur's hands gripped his shoulders and shoved him back down. He kept his hands on Merlin, gloved fingers squeezing just below the collar bone. "That's funny. I am positive I saw you devour not one, but three apples while you sat and watched the knights practising yesterday."

"Red apples," Merlin squeaked as he sunk lower, away from Arthur's grip.

Arthur leaned forward so that his breath sent Merlin's ridiculously shaggy hair fluttering. "Red apples?" he said, like Merlin might have walked into a few too many walls lately.

"Yes. I – I like red apples. This apple's green."

Arthur narrowed his eyes at the fruit that possibly, once, weeks ago, had been a green apple, though now it was shrivelled and brown. And Merlin had served it to him, together with a piece of moulding bread and had called it breakfast. The bread had been flung at Merlin's head, but the apple… there was only one thing he wanted to see done with that apple.

"Eat it." He bent so that his lips grazed Merlin's ear. "Or I will get a shovel full of dung from the stables and force feed you that." He paused then added, "while you are in the stocks."

Arthur could feel the heat rising in Merlin's cheeks. And this was one of the many reasons he could never sack Merlin, no matter how pathetic of a manservant he was. Merlin, red cheeked, fighting everything inside himself to bite his tongue on the words he really wanted to say to Arthur was one of Arthur's favourite things in the world. When Merlin looked up at him, defiance flashing in his eyes, a low burn of challenge stirred in Arthur's belly, the surge of adrenaline that was usually reserved for the instant after a gauntlet hit a stone floor. Instead of a duel, this was a battle of wills that ended with Arthur satisfied and Merlin properly humbled or Merlin in the stocks which, in the end, amounted to the same thing.

Arthur moved to the other side of the table, his fingers spread wide, pressing against the fine wood of the tabletop, his eyes keen on Merlin's mouth, hovering above the apple. "Camelot's food supply is precious," he explained.

Merlin's eyes lit up as they always did when he'd thought of something remotely clever. "Then you should eat it, sire."

Arthur's chest warmed at the sire, spoken with that flippant, mocking disrespect that made Arthur want to do filthy things to punish those lips. Arthur growled. "Eat it, Merlin."

There must have been something in his voice this time that told Merlin he'd pushed hard enough. After a heartbeat, Merlin took a deep breath and opened his mouth. His teeth pressed into the soft flesh and the apple oozed brown mush onto Merlin's fingers and chin. He choked on the taste, which must have been vile.

And Arthur watched, breathless at the submission, and tried to ignore the stir in his loins at the sight of Merlin swallowing at Arthur's command.
