The Vigil by anon @ merlin_games [Team Canon] Arthur/Merlin [PG-13] (4k)
Summary: Merlin/Arthur, Angst. "All good things must come to an end."

This is a missing scene from 4x03, specifically what happened just before Arthur was called to sit vigil at his father's side in the Great Hall. It is sad, no question, but it is also incredibly beautiful in the way whispered talks with close friends are right after a death and you are all raw inside and talking about things, sharing memories and thoughts you normally wouldn’t. The writing is spectacular, taking the reader on a journey through what Arthur is trying to tell Merlin through his grief, remembering the good times with his father but also leading up to the core of the matter which is his regret. I didn’t cry through this, oddly. I think I was swept away but the intensity of the friendship and understanding these two men have that they can share such a moment despite this massive rift between them (that only one of them realises is there). I can’t say enough how much this piece moved me.
