A Long Way to Go Before We Are Truly Divine by Staraflur (47k) [NC-17]
Summary: Merlin is content, but not exactly happy, in Ealdor, so when his mother's friend Gaius' shows up with a tale of dragons under castles and priestesses and an exiled prince, Merlin is thrilled to listen. The reality, however, isn't so great: the priestess is a killer, the prince is a prat, and the dragon sure does have some curious ideas about them. But Gaius is saying it's Merlin responsibility -- destiny, even -- to help Arthur win back his kingdom, and to evade all the forces amassing against him on the way. This would, of course, be a whole lot easier if he could stand to be in the same village as Arthur for enough time for them to stop arguing.

Summary: A promotion and a swanky new title, one might even think Merlin’s luck had changed. That is, if you didn’t look too closely to the fine print on Uther’s offer. There is companionship and then there is companionship.

This work is a completed fic, being posted in chapters. I feel entirely cruel reccing it because at the end of each piece I am screaming and cursing at myself for ever started this fic. It is wonderful and I hate every moment that I am waiting for the next bit. A lot of WIPs I have read are relationship based, ending each bit on a dramatic turn for the pairing and ripping your heart out with each cliffie. Nothing wrong with that! But this is not one of those fics. It is plotty… oh, so, fantastically plotty. With court intrigue and the politics of the people vs. the politics of the court and how newly crowned King Arthur must take the help from the few he trusts: Merlin, Morgana, Gwen, Lancelot and Gawain and tiptoe through the land mines of ruling his kingdom.

This fic basically takes Season 1 and retells it under the premise of Nimueh shows up at the castle and kills Uther, while Arthur 'escapes' with a few men, Morgana and Gaius. They head to Ealdor to find Gaius's friend Hunith and with the help of Merlin and the towns folk try to find a way to recapture Camelot. Very interesting AU and true to the basic concepts and characterizations of season 1.

Cracky title, cracky premise, not a cracky fic. Merlin is appointed Lord of the Bedchamber to Arthur, which he thinks is a 'step up' from manservant, but everyone else knows means something else. You have Arthur embarrassed at having someone 'coerced' into his bed, Morgana outraged that such a title exists, the Knights mocking and jealous of Merlin's new 'intimacy' with the prince and Merlin clueless as to what everyone is upset about. This fic gives great UST and lovely Arthur/Merlin dynamic that is just as frustrating as delicious.
