Thank you to
ella_bane for the quick beta read. :D
Harry took one longing look back at the cottage. Through the windows he could see the yellow flicker of candles, the glow from the hearth. Their house was filled to the rafters with family and friends, laughter and eggnog. Mrs Granger had even bought figgy pudding.
Luna had graciously invited everyone to join them on their trek. Ron had snorted. Mrs Weasley had fussed with their scarves while Hermione muttered something about nonsense. No one had strapped on the extra set of snowshoes and braved the frigid air.
Hopeful, Harry stopped at the first tree they encountered, barely a mile from the house. “This one looks good.”
Luna turned, and with an indulgent smile, shook her head. “It’s full of Nargles, Harry.” She patted his shoulder and kept walking.
They continued well past what Harry considered covered under the ‘for better or for worse’ clause and then a half-mile on top of that. He tugged his scarf tighter. “Couldn’t we just chop one down and decorate it in our living room?”
Luna only giggled.
When she finally stopped, Harry nearly bowled her over he’d been so lost in the quiet noise of snow falling on trees and the steady rhythm of one foot in front of the other.
“This one.” She pointed at a massive spruce at the centre of a clearing. It must have stood forty feet. With a wave of her wand she added the first scarlet garland, winding it from the top-most branch to the forest floor. She danced about the tree, adding bobbles and bells, and treats for deer, squirrels and rabbits. She hummed to herself, arms in the air and lit the night around them with the shimmer of her magic.
Harry watched, his feet and fingers numb, and fell in love all over again.
