Me on AO3

So... after years of saying I would someday, I finally got an AO3 account.

Basically an old Buffy archive (Angel Book of Days) was moving to AO3 and it was a good excuse to move my fics that were there archive with ABoD over to A03.

I'm slowly uploading my fics. But eventually, any fic over 2k should be archived there.

After deleting my IJ account it is nice to think I will have a backup somewhere. :)

It's converting me too now that I read on my tablet instead of printing. :D

I've been having this problem too, but even A03 isn't that wonderful. At least with my limited skills, I can't seem to make the text larger without having the words flow off this screen. I am trying to figure out some kind of mobile stylesheet for LJ to deal with it all. :(

hmm... What sort of tablet do you have?

I find certain lj formats are impossible to read (I have to view in my style because I have really narrow margins).
but Ao3 is perfect.

I have a Kindle. Even in A03 the font is tiny. It's nothing like having a real epub on a reader. All is despair :(

It's also more fun to read in the LJ community. And adding the ?format=light bit to the end of the URL really helps, but only so much.

I find the LJ mobile site hard to get to the things I'm looking for http://m.livejournal.com

Alack.

Totally butting in here to ask, are you actually viewing the AO3 site on your Kindle to read the fics or are you downloading them onto your Kindle? Because I download mobi files from AO3 all the time and they're very easy to read and look exactly like a regular ebook.

I've tried both. When I download, I download the PDF. I should clarify that I have a Kindle Fire, and it's new, so maybe I'm doing it wrong ;)

When I tried downloading the mobi file, I couldn't open it. I'm not sure if it was a problem with the particular file itself, how it opened on the Fire, or something else.

I appreciate your butting in!

Hmm, let me jump in too! Like giselleslash, I download .mobis for my kindle. i find that it's the best format. also, because of my poor eyesight, i've changed the default font size on the kindle. that helped a lot, i found. how are you getting fics/files onto the kindle?

Hiya, thanks! I posted a little further down the thread. :) I try to download them through the Fire's web browser, but it looks like that might not be the best way. Sads.

I see that you and Giselle have been talking about it (though I didn't read your entire conversation).

I highly recommend Calibre for interacting with your kindle. I use Calibre to both organize my libraryand load books onto my kindle. The best thing about Calibre is that it converts file formats super easily. So you can load an epub, pdf, lit, etc. file. Select the files, hit the "covert books" button and Calibre will convert it to a file type of your choice (best bets for the kindle are .mobi and .pdf). The only thing it can't work with are the locked drm files from amazon, etc. Also, if your Kindle is plugged in to your computer, you can just send the books to the Kindle (via "send to device" button).

I think Calibre is pretty user friendly but if you have any questions I'd be happy to help you with it! Calibre can be downloaded for free here: http://calibre-ebook.com/download. I love how much more I'm able to read on my kindle thanks to this software.

In terms of formatting, mobi files have proven to be the best for reading. So, I use Calibre to convert everything to mobi. Though to be honest, all I've been reading of late is fic. Love that AO3 download button (i then load fic into calibre as well - you can tag by fandom, pairing, genre, whatever you come up with which is really nice).

That's odd because mobi files are perfect for Kindles. They're the ones I always try to find when I'm downloading fanfic and ebooks. Hm. Strange. :( I'd try downloading another mobi file and seeing if it works because I've never had a problem with them, but I just have a regular Kindle 3G so I don't know if the Fire is different in regards to mobi files or not.

Oh good! LOL. I always hate butting into convos, I just wish I could've been more helpful. ;)

I think I found some clues on the problem. I am downloading through the Kindle Fire's web browser, and the file doesn't seem to go anywhere that I can easily access (like to my ebook collection on the Fire), but lives somewhat precariously in my browser download area. When I open the file, it displays in the browser, hence the crappy formatting. And the mobi file doesn't open at all.

I think the Fire is designed primarily to serve as a portal to Amazon, so it looks like they make it a bit more of a process to download books that are not from Amazon.

Here's some info I found online:
"The best way to load non-Amazon ebooks and personal documents onto the Kindle Fire is to email them to the Kindle Fire’s free email address. This can be found under Settings > My Account, and can be modified from the Manage Your Kindle page under personal documents settings.

The Kindle Personal Documents Service supports these specific file types: .DOC, .DOCX, .HTML, HTM, RTF, .JPEG, JPG, .MOBI, .AZW, .GIF, .PNG, .BMP, .PDF, and .ZIP.

If you have a whole bunch of files you can put them all in a ZIP package and send them and they will be unpacked automatically upon arrival on the Kindle Fire.

Another option, say you download a MOBI ebook with the web browser and want to read it in the Kindle Fire’s reading app. The file won’t open the Kindle app from the browser so you have to use a File Manager such as ES file Explorer (free in the Amazon appstore) and move the downloaded ebook from the “Download” folder to the “Documents” folder. Then the Kindle Fire has to be restarted for it to show up in the documents list." - http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/2011/12/24/kindle-fire-tips-tricks-and-how-to-tutorials-video

Le sigh.

Thanks for all your advice, and maybe it will help other people using Kindle Fires!

That seems like a lot of work - can't you just download everything to your computer and then connect your Fire to your computer and drag everything over? That's what I do and it works a treat. Super easy too. I don't download anything directly from my Kindle - unless I'm buying something through Amazon and then they just send it to my Kindle email.
