Pottermore!!!

Can someone explain to me (in small words because I have not had my coffee yet) what they believe Pottermore is going to be about?

JKR Announces Pottermore

Can I get excited yet or do I need to keep clutching my pearls and hoping this is going to be cool?

I love the paper art in the announcement.

I was reading yesterday that it might be a scavenger hunt with real wands and quills as prizes, but the announcement sounds like it will be a place to keep the HP hypeexcitement going and be a centralized marketing place for ebooks, etc. It may mean JKR is more interested in staying with HP and playing with the backstory she's been "hoarding" than moving on to something new. JKR=HP fan!

*cheers the new writing* I totally agree with you that it will be awesome to have new views from her on the characters, in terms of giving us fresh material to fic/art it up with, but also being a bit scared, because, ugh, don't mess with our fanon, yo. :)

And it is smart of her to keep things going. Even in LJ circles, I've seen Kids These Days saying things like they only got into HP after the 6th movie, and still haven't read books 1-5, and stuff. o_O. If she can get a new generation back into the canon, that would be awesome!

Hi Rita!! It looks to me that it will be both a place of more canon/backstory, which will be good for fandom (plot bunnies, debates, more to go on in many cases with side characters), and also a place for AU. If fans like us are shaping the stories, that means we are getting to pick backstory, and it seems she must have a place for different permutations of things.

Like, if Pottermore opens Fabian Prewett's backstory, 500 people will write it, and then 1,000 more can write a fic set in any one of those versions of backstory. That is what I think it will be, with JKR herself writing some of the backstories.

There will be romance, I am sure, and zero explicit anything, but I wonder if slash of the pg level will be allowed if het is. I mean, simply relationship getting together stories, or past loves.... yes, I would guess that gay love and pining would have to be as welcome as het.

I don't think it's any different than what we already do, lol! But we'd be great at building it. I hope some of us participate; we have so much experience building out characters and new plots with canon as our guide.

I'm really sad, actually... because I know that a couple years ago I would have been so invested in this, but now... I'm not. Whatever it turns out to be, I hope it's good and what everyone would want it to be, but I get this niggling feeling in the back of my head that the ship has already sailed and run her course. It may sail again, but briefly, and will be attacked by pirates almost immediately. :-( I miss my enthusiasm for HP. It was such a driving and creative force in my life. Merlin's doing it for me now, but I forsee a time when that gets old, too, and something new will take its place. Not for awhile yet, though, I hope.

Well, I was going to comment, but you said everything I planned to say about it. LOL! So.... iawtc. :D

On that note, I don't WANT to get invested in another of her Potter endeavors. Yes, I love the universe she created, but I'm kinda burnt out on it and need to move on with my life. If she's such a prolific writer, why doesn't she herself move on and show she can do something outside of this universe? It's not like she needs the money continuing it would generate. I feel like I should start calling her our generation's Harper Lee.



Merlin makes me happy in the still blond/still black hair doing it sort of way, but without all the 'oh my god pedophile perv guilt' associated with it. LOL!
