I realize my timing is crappy because paperlegends (the Merlin Big Bang) started today, but I had to share some of the joy of my weekend reading before I get distracted by The New Shiny. I'll be back with Big Bang recs later this week, I imagine.


Journey into the Interior by Amber [NC-17] (10k)
Summary: Merlin works in Camelot Massage Parlour, London. This is where Arthur finds him. | 'Arthur' chokes and flushes, as though they're not standing in an erotic massage parlour, as though 'Arthur' doesn't have a copy of Penthouse held loosely in one hand. "I'm hardly trying to pick you up, Merlin." He chuckles a little bitterly. "Look, d'you really not know who I am?"

A lovely reincarnation fic. Merlin is so lost and disillusioned, the price of immortality and the defence mechanism to keep his sanity after so many lives lived waiting for Arthur’s return. Unfortunately when Arthur does final come to him, Merlin must find himself again.

Of Rain and Red Shirts by pixieblues [NC-17] (4k)
Summary: It's just him and the rain now.

Well done non-linear piece. An aching and beautiful look at a complicated relationship that comes together and shatters and finally fixes itself again. Beautifully written.

Off the Deep End by b_b_banana [NC-17] (12k)
Summary: When they say crazy in love, they mean it literally. Why else would anyone keep coming back?

A lovely break-up fic, with Merlin being hired as a Pool Boy for his recent ex. The history behind them and their current interactions are nice and angsty, the emotions run deep on both sides and it’s inevitable that things are going to blow up before long. Also Morgana and Merlin’s friendship is adorable.

Not an Act, But a Habit by mellacita [NC-17] (18k)
Summary: Arthur is a spoiled university student. After one transgression too many, Arthur's father makes him spend a night at a hostel for homeless youth to give him a reality check. While there, he meets a tough-talking kid who is more than he seems. In spite of themselves, they become inseparable.

I adored this fic. Bitter!emo!homeless Merlin is hilarious and a bit heartbreaking, but not as much as I’d feared. Arthur is perfectly spoiled and clueless about anything beyond himself. Their journey towards friendship and beyond is sweet and tender and well paced.

Yeah, that was the only way I could remember. I'm awful at names. :D I think I have read enough Merlin fics over time to start to get a sense of the personalities... and the other characters (Morgana and Gwen?)

That bit was so adorable. :D I loved Merlin's defense mechanism of blah, blah 'I had to suck someone cock for my shoes' thing. That paired with his sweetness was really lovely.

Oh! Hello there! Such a great fic! That scene with Merlin smacking Arthur in the back of the head with his own wallet instead of stealing it???? Something about that just stuck in my head for DAYS. Great read.
