The Grandfather of all slash: Kirk/Spock makes the news

Newsweek attempts to answer the age old questions:

What the hell is Slash? and Where the hell did it come from?

I'm rather impressed at the accuracy of the article.

Where No Man Has Gone Before

*snort*

quote:
Some stories—including many tales centering around "pon farr," the overpowering Vulcan mating impulse introduced in the episode "Amok Time"—are almost unbelievably explicit, but most are primarily about the creation and maintenance of a romantic relationship.

I have this wicked desire to see what exactly makes something "unbelievably explicit". *g*

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] romaine24 for the link!!! *twirls you*

Hmm... I don't know. To me, I doesn't sound like Mary-sueness, more like when an author writes something, anything, their beliefs and hopes and dreams sometimes leak into the piece their writing at that time. Maybe she's put a bit of herself in every female she's written, bits of her personality split up here and there to make them seem more human and real and this one just happened to be in Narcissa. But thanks for the clarification!

it was just my thoughts.

I also propose changing Where No Man Has Gone Before to Where No Man Has Come Before

I think Hell already gave me a passport ... the red devils and golden fires are quite Gryffindor, if you think about it.

As for feeding your kids .. you're a mom, right? Whatever you do is COOL! GREAT!!! THE GREATEST WEAPON CALLED LOVE!!!!!!!

A journalist once interviewed me and a friend about this fanfic stuff, and despite being visibly baffled and out of his depth wrote quite a balanced article... which his paper ran underneath a large photo of two female cosplayers in full Klingon garb, with nothing to indicate that this wasn't a photo of the people being interviewed.

Hahaha! Yes, I am an oooooooooooooooold K/Ser from waaaaaay back. I've been a slash fan for 28 years, gen fan even longer than that. I did a post about my early days in fandom a few years ago. Ah, such fond memories.

Yep, so excited about Friday. I'm actually a bit worried that the new movie will rekindle my love for my original OTP. It's hard to give up almost 20 years exclusive shipping. ;D So, if my journal suddenly changes from Snarry to K/S, you'll know what happened.

I have hundreds of zines. Some fandoms still prefer to do at least initial releases in print form before releasing their fics into the wilds of the internet. Some people claim zines are higher quality. Meh. I know I've read some horrible crap in zine form and some brilliant stuff for free, so YMMV.

I never use the same name in two fandoms, so, thankfully, all my Batman fic is safely hidden. *snerk* Though I never wrote any Mary-Sue bad!fic, just regular plain 'ol bad!fic.

LOL! I knew you'd have something to say on this subject, when I saw it!!

Ha. It sounds funny to have "slash" explained.

I truly wish I could see that movie with you on Friday! But I gotta take various teenagers, and i'm sure that will be a great time, too.

please to be bringing on the unbelievably explicit K/S!!!!

I actually liked that article. It was totally non-judgmental, which I think is awesome!

[identity profile] accioslash.livejournal.com 2009-05-07 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. No, you really don't want to see it with me because I am going with a whole bunch of old K/S fen and we are going to get thrown out of the theater. ;D I imagine there will be squee plus lots of complaining about things not being done according to canon! Star Trek canon is srs bsns. As opposed to Harry Potter canon which is merely a suggestion.

[identity profile] marguerite-26.livejournal.com 2009-05-07 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
hahahaha!

I could just imagine your face when you saw that pic. :D

I'm sure they wanted to grab everyone's attention with the photo of a couple of 'weirdos', but it's too bad the article would have been lost in the lulz.

"Stories are often rated on a scale (G to NC-17) by the author at the very beginning so fans of strictly romantic K/S don't accidentally encounter jarring pornography."

What do they mean, "jarring" pornograpy? I don't understand this concept! :D

[identity profile] marguerite-26.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"jarring" pornograpy?

A wee little bit of alien tentacle sex and people get prudish. :)

[identity profile] marguerite-26.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It was really well done. And a lot of the comments had very intelligent additions.

[identity profile] marguerite-26.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Once I see the movie, I would totally read that pairing. :D

Or you know... maybe look up a classic.
